There are many different research jobs available but they basically all require the same skills: the ability to find and extract information whether from a company, Web site, or person. In addition to this there is also scientific research which starts out with a hypothesis and then researchers conduct experiments to find if the hypothesis is true. This has led to finding cures for illnesses and increasing a womans fertility, for example.

If you feel that you have the right kind of attitude and the right qualifications for a job like this, then there are plenty of research jobs available such as operations research jobs. Universities for example, may advertise for a research assistant or associate to help out on a current research project. The project might be social, scientific, historical, or literary, depending on the student's area of expertise. Generally speaking you would need good general research skills, searching the Web and library for any required information. You may also be required to undertake interviews or develop and administer a questionnaire. Once the data is collected it is usually analyzed and written up in the form of a report and occasionally an article for an academic journal. You may need qualitative research skills, scientific skills, or statistical skills for this.

Writers also undertake research. Whether authors write factual material or fiction, in order to make a piece of work interesting and worthwhile it needs grounding in some sort of reality. Writers will research places, characters, and specialized things like methods of murder if they are a mystery writer. They may undertake legal research or look into whatever aspects of their work for which they need extra information.

Whatever your area of interest there is bound to be some element of research involved and there are plenty of research jobs around. You may try the academic pages of the press or you may prefer to search online at a site that is dedicated to research jobs of all kinds: information research jobs (the basis of most types of research), operations research jobs, and research interviewer jobs. Having all of the available research opportunities in one place makes it much easier to get the kind of research job that you want.

Market Research

There are plenty of jobs available in market research. This particular job requires different levels of research skills, depending on what a company or group of companies requires. Very often market researchers are part-time employees whose main job is to approach members of the public with specific questions and ask their opinion on particular stores, companies, or products. This information is then used to assess what the current public buying trends are like which brand of toothpaste they prefer and where they buy their groceries and why.

Sometimes market research requires a different level of research skills, for example if a company intends to launch a new product but wants to test it out on a chosen group of people first. The way the group is constituted will depend largely on the product the company wants to try out and the area where they plan to launch it. To do this, companies often employ people to undertake what is known as focus group research. This type of research is akin to a group interview where the group is meant to focus on a specific topic; in this instance the focus is the pluses and minuses of a particular product. Group members will answer questions and may be asked to give a personal opinion on something. The interview is recorded and the recordings are transcribed. Then researchers can see whether the focus group has made a case for or against the product and whether any changes need to be made prior to the launch. Very often the researcher will write up their findings together with some recommendations based on the focus group for the company in question.

Company Research

Company research involves information research where a researcher is engaged to find out as much as they can about another company or group of companies. Much of the information will be publicly available but there are cases where someone might require you to go into a company undercover to find out what the company is working on or whether they are engaging in illegal practices.

Evaluative Research

Most evaluative research is undertaken by freelance researchers who are engaged by companies or institutions and voluntary agencies to undertake a review and evaluation of working practice and to assess whether and in what ways the company or institute might be improved. This kind of research often involves face-to-face interviews, focus group research, or group interviews and documentary research. Once the researchers have gathered all of the information together they will then write it up in a formal report together with recommendations which often take into consideration future practice and government policy making.

There are many different types of research. If you want a job in research you will most likely be expected to have at least a bachelor's degree, and very often a higher degree. Most high-profile research reports are written by respected academics or professional researchers with at least a master's degree and a solid grounding in different types of research methods.
