Position Summary

The College of Public Health is seeking a Research Specialist, Principal to lead multiple projects in the fields of environmental health and assessment. The candidate will collaborate with faculty researchers in the design and collection of data, but will be expected to implement the research independently. The candidate must be able to direct, monitor and participate in data collection, evaluation, and analysis, yet be able to mentor and supervise a team of students.

The candidate must be highly organized and able to track multiple projects. Two faculty, from different departments (EOH & Epidemiology and Biostatistics), jointly support this position. Boris Reiss is interested in time-resolved exposure assessment using hair and Laser-Ablation-ICPMS as a biomarker of exposures and real-time monitors with applications to compliance, epidemiology, and risk-assessment. Working with Heidi Brown, the candidate will model the spatial and temporal distribution of mosquito born disease.

The position involves field and laboratory work as well as data management and analysis both requiring administration of laboratory space and equipment, as well as providing the opportunity for complex statistical analyses, manuscript preparation and presentation.

Incumbents may be required to travel to remote locations to perform research experiments, surveys and may be required to work with potentially hazardous materials such as toxic chemicals, radiation and/or disease causing organisms.

This position is fully funded for two (2) years at a 1.0 FTE with the intention to extend the position with federal funding.

Duties & Responsibilities

- Code experimental into simulations using programs like Matlab, R, KNIME.

- Design empirical experiments to support mathematical methods.

- Mine for data to parameterize epidemiological and exposure models.

- Quickly become familiar with new measurement technologies and statistical tools to meet the project needs and be able to train students in these techniques.

- Collect environmental, epidemiological, and occupational data and samples.

- Maintain data and models for collaboration using tools such as Open Science Framework.

- Support the administrative responsibilities of the PIs (e.g. lab maintenance, scheduling, purchasing).

- Design and solve systematic technical solutions including maintaining and repairing laboratory equipment as needed.

- Safely handle human samples such as feces, blood, urine, sputum, or hair.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

- Candidates should be able to show evidence of expertise with specialized software (e.g., programming in MATLAB, Python, R, SQL, Stata) and a capacity to work in a highly functional technical laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

- Substantial coding experience.

- Experience organizing and relating data sources.

- Experience with statistical analysis such as time-series analysis, structural equation modeling.

- Experience in laboratory-related mechanical, administrative, and problem solving.

Arizona Board of Regents Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three years of related research experience; OR, Masters degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND four years related research experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

- Evidence of independent work (e.g. first author work).

- Basic chemical and biological laboratory skills (e.g., insectary work, ICP-MS).

- Applied technical experience in fixing, repairing, building, designing advanced technical equipment.

- Regulatory compliance, including EPA, OSHA, FDA product testing and certification protocols.

- Experience with Laser-ablation ICP-MS and air quality monitoring equipment.

- Knowledge of management and supervision principles.

- Working knowledge of quality control system e.g. ISO9001.

- Two years of supervisory experience or any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
