Candidates are sought for the position of Research Associate in the Minton Laboratory in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. (MSU). Research in the Minton Lab comprises gas-phase and gas-surface reaction dynamics and kinetics. Specifically, crossed-beams and beam-surface scattering methods are used to study energy transfer and reaction dynamics, typically at hyperthermal energies, with applications to the analysis of liquid surface chemical structure and spacecraft-environment interactions. Current research projects include studies of structure, reactivity, and transport at the gas/ionic liquid interface, oxidation of carbon and silicon carbide at high temperatures, decomposition of ablative heat shield materials, a concentrator for detection of trace gases in tenuous planetary atmospheres, and the development of new and more durable materials for use on spacecraft in low Earth orbit. Experimental techniques commonly used in the Minton Lab include the creation of atomic and molecular beams (including hyperthermal beams), crossed-beams scattering, beam-surface scattering, mass spectrometry, laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI), ion velocity-map imaging, surface topographical analysis (AFM, SEM), surface chemical analysis (XPS) and surface structural and chemical analysis by MD and QM/MM simulations. Three machines based on vacuum chambers currently exist: (1) a universal crossed-beams machine with a rotatable mass spectrometer detector, which allows the identification of reaction pathways and determination of product translational energy and angular distributions, (2) a crossed-beams machine with laser-based detection (LIF and REMPI) of products, with the goal of determining state-resolved translational energy and angular distributions, and (3) an apparatus dedicated to the characterization of pyrolysis gases from heat shield materials with the use of mass spectrometry. The research involves collaborative efforts between experimentalists and theoreticians at several universities, companies, and Air Force and NASA laboratories. The Research Associate will be expected to work with minimal supervision designing and carrying out experiments to reach project goals and have the ability to use their own discretion and judgement to analyze data and guide future experimentation.
Duties and Responsibilities
Design and carry out experiments exercising discretion and judgement with minimal supervision.
Analyze and interpret data using your experience and judgment to guide future experiments supporting the goals of the project.
Maintain vacuum equipment, laser systems, quadrupole mass spectrometers, and electronics as well as conduct experiments on custom molecular beam machines that employ these components.
Use commercial surface analysis instruments to analyze surfaces using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron microscopy.
Daily tasks may include, but are not limited to: maintaining equipment, conducting experiments, organizing laboratory and cataloging laboratory equipment, ordering supplies, analyzing data using commercial and custom computer programs, and providing support in the preparation of publications and presentations.
Interacting with Minton Lab workers, external collaborators, and external sponsors.
Training of new group members.
Required Qualifications ? Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Masters degree in chemistry or engineering related field, a Bachelors degree in chemistry or engineering related field with 2 years of experience, or an equivalent level of experience and qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications ? Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of physical chemistry.
Knowledge of calculus, including multi-variable calculus.
Good writing skills.
