Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Functional genetics lab utilizes in vitro and in vivo models to evaluate the function of genetic variants associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The TRAI actively participants in experimental research and has the opportunity to present his/her lab work. He/she will work independently, and perform non-routine, highly specialized experiments. Also participate in the modification of research protocols.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Execute molecular biology experiments and optimize and archive protocols for lab use, write new and update existing protocols.

2) Responsible for coordination of assigned projects, including quality assurance, preparing data reports, prioritizing time to meet deadlines, and maintaining detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks and other records.

3) Prepares reagents, solutions and buffers for use in procedures.

4) Under supervision of Research Laboratory Director and Specialist, establishes new and modifies existing research techniques.

5) All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1) BS or BA required, preferred in Biological Science.

2) Experience with molecular cloning, PCR, cell culture and transfection is desirable.

3) Experience with reporter assay and RNAi delivery is desirable.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

1) Ability to pay attention to details and to be precise. Sound analytical and organizational skills.

2) Excellent written and verbal communication skills, must be able to thoroughly document experiments, protocols, and data. Must be able to logically structure tasks and set priorities.

3) Knowledge of cell biology and/or molecular biology typically obtained through a bachelors degree program in biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, or laboratory science. Ability to identify potential problems, communicate and troubleshoot them effectively.

4) Must be able to operate and maintain delicate electronic equipment and safely use and dispose of toxic chemicals and biohazards materials.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Variety of laboratory/office settings. Exposure to toxic chemicals and biohazards materials. Work may require odd hours to complete experiments.
