: Texas A&M AgriLife Research, Uvalde ( is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the Systems Plant Physiology program. Initial salary shall be commensurate with qualifications and experience.


Specific duties pertaining to research and independent research activities. This position reports to the principal investigator (PI).

Working with HPLC-MS-MS or similar analytical platforms, developing protocols and methods for detecting novel compounds, working with instrument manufacturers and vendors on equipment failure, performance or maintenance issues.

Design and perform basic experiments (analytical, biochemistry, molecular biology) using model and vegetable plants under the supervision of PI in the laboratory, greenhouses or field. Collect and analyze plant samples and assist in sample analysis.

Plan experimental work and coordinate use of equipment and other activities in the laboratory. summarize results for potential publications.

Participate in research papers and grant writing, training and supervision of graduate students and other laboratory personnel.

Travel connected with official duties may be required. This may include attendance at night and/or weekend meetings, participation in out-of-county events. Must have access to personal vehicle and obtain/maintain valid Driver's license and appropriate liability insurance. Must have willingness to work necessary hours to fulfill job responsibilities (some evenings and weekends). Must reside in assigned county (NOTE: Urban designed counties exempt from this requirement).

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

PhD degree in plant breeding, plant biochemistry, plant biology or related fields in agriculture or horticultural sciences.

Experience working with analytical instruments such as HPLC-MS-MS, sample collection and extraction of various plant derived metabolites, developing new methods and protocols for identifying novel compounds as needed.

Computer competencies required including the ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses, present data during meetings and conferences and perform other computer related tasks as directed by the supervisor.

Strong service ethic and desire to work with all audiences in assigned county, regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, disability or national origin.

Ability to establish effective working relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Strong organizational skills, excellent communication and documentation skills. Must be able to work individually and by interacting with other research teams within the research center.

Familiarity with appropriate laboratory, farm and/or technical equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least 2-3 years of experience working in an analytical laboratory with hands-on experience in analytical platforms like UPLC, HPLC, MS-MS or GC-MS systems. Previous experience working with molecular biology in plants is desirable but not essential.

Proficient in analyzing small molecules using analytical instruments like UPLC, HPLC or GC, UV spectrophotometer, mass spectroscopy.

Knowledge and skills for operation and routine trouble shooting of equipment, knowledge and experience with chromatography data acquisition software, ability to effectively utilize computer and applicable software, perform basic statistical analyses, and other computer related tasks as directed by PI.

Familiarity with basic tools related to molecular biology such as DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, cloning, basic concepts of plant genetics


Uvalde is a community of 16,000 people located in southwest Texas, about an hour and a half from San Antonio. Much of the surrounding land is used for agriculture, although the Hill Country lies just to the north with plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Several state parks and state natural areas are within a two hour radius drive. The Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension Center at Uvalde houses faculty from a variety of research and extension programs, including breeding and genetics, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, plant pathology, horticulture, economics, range science, wildlife, and 4-H.
