What You Will Do
This is a two-year Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Computational Earth Science Group (EES-16; ~~~/EES-16) in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. (LANL). There is the potential extension to a third year depending on available funding and performance. The primary purpose of this position is to develop and implement smoke generation models in multiple coupled fire/atmosphere models with various spatiotemporal resolutions and fidelities. The successful candidate will contribute to analysis of near-field coupled fire/atmosphere influences on downwind smoke concentrations in the context of wildfires, prescribed fires, and large urban conflagrations using HIGRAD/FIRETEC and refinement of reduced-order smoke models.
Candidates with the following backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply: modeling soot formation from biomass and other materials, developing reduced -order or probabilistic models for fast-running or under-resolved modeling contexts, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling skills, high-performance computing (HPC) experience, and computational and numerical model development experience. The successful candidate will be expected to publish results in pee- reviewed literature and present work at national and international conferences.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
The successful candidate will have demonstrated:
Demonstrated strong background in soot generation modeling, using high-fidelity models to develop reduced-order or lower-resolution probabilistic models, fluid mechanics, combustion;
Demonstrated strong computational and numerical modeling skills in fluid-mechanics with experience of developing and applying CFD models on HPC platforms;
A demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications;
Proven ability to meet schedules and deliverables for research projects;
Demonstrated proficiency in programming languages (e.g. C, C , Fortran, Python, etc.);
Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
Desired Skills:
Preference will be given to candidates who also have demonstrated:
Demonstrated familiarity with modeling of large-scale fires;
Demonstrated proficiency in performing data analysis and data visualization using tools (e.g. Paraview, VisIt);
Demonstrated experience working with a multi-disciplinary team.
Education: Candidates must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and must be within five years of completion of the Ph.D.), specializing in combustion, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, applied physics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field.
