Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Orthopaedic Engineering Research, this person will be responsible for conducting biomechanical engineering projects and testing activities, facilities management and participation in engineering collaborative efforts and outreach for the Orthopaedic Engineering Research Laboratory (OERL). Supervises OERL technical and clinical research staff and assists the Director in the management of major research efforts.


Essential Functions

*Serves as an investigator in the development, management and conduct of engineering research projects initiated by the orthopaedic department and/or affiliated practice partners, as well as externally funded device or systems development and testing activities.
*Provides direction and supervision and manages time and labor for specified OERL technical staff. Supervises medical residents, and engineering or allied medical students involved in orthopaedic research projects or sub-contract activities for the OERL *Provides technical direction in the specification of major engineering equipment or software packages in support of OERL mission critical directives. *Assists the Director with software applications, systems development

and testing of all instrumentation and software prior to pre-clinical use. *Interacts with Atrium Information and Analytical Services, sub-contractors and remote data acquisition sites in conjunction with intramural and externally-funded projects. *Provides technical training of in-house, and affiliated remote site staff involved in OERL projects. *Oversees the management of equipment used at multiple system-related and remote sites. *Provides instruction for orthopaedic departmental and affiliate faculty, staff, residents and fellows with regard to safety and good laboratory practices regarding use of OERL equipment and/or software application packages. *Assists in the specification and procurement of minor equipment and/or laboratory supplies. *Assists in technical report and manuscript preparation for the

publication/dissemination of OERL project results.

Physical Requirements

Able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally. Position also requires some extended periods of sitting and computer usage. Periodic travel to remote sites required.

Education, Experience and Certifications

BSC in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of laboratory experience or MSC in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering (with a mechanical engineering emphasis). Ability to work with a variety of sensor/instrumentation systems for data acquisition purposes. Ability to program in C++ and/or MATLAB also required. Previous experience in engineering research or product/device development preferred. Knowledge of material testing systems and common machining system preferred.
