The Senior Research Chemist will be part of the Analytical Support Section at the Brewster, New York, Surface Chemistry Business Unit Research Laboratory of Akzo Nobel. The Analytical Section provides analytical expertise and analysis in support of new Product Development, Product Applications, and Manufacturing. This position is for a Chromatography Specialist within the Analytical Support Section. Our goal is to provide the best information within a short time to our customers in response to their characterization needs. The team operates regionally supporting all aspects of the business from three sites in the continental US. Capabilities and capacity at each site is leveraged to achieve the best result with the most prompt response.
Key Objectives/Principal Accountabilities • Provide insightful, prompt analysis of developmental and commercial products.• Provide support to plant operations in resolving production upsets. • Perform as a member of an extended team encompassing multiple sites and a wide array of chemical analysis needs. • Supports the development of new products. • Interact closely with Synthesis, GRD TS&d and plant QC groups in assisting with developing new products resolving customer concerns and providing methodology. • Maintains a laboratory notebook, provide insightful analysis reports, prepare monthly project reports and utilize LIMS database. • Maintains company safety standards and lives the company values.
The successful candidate will have the ability to operate in a small group environment responding to varied priority needs from on-site and other site requests. Skills to multitask between report preparation, data reduction, sample preparation and instrumental upkeep are required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are critical to ensure clear information transfer to remote customers.
The successful candidate should have a deep background in chemistry and significant operational experience with chromatographic analytical instrumentation (GPC, LC, LC/MS, GC, GC/MS) applied in an industrial setting. Demonstrated ability in method development and the application of statistical data analysis methods are required. The chromatography instrumentation the candidate will be responsible for using and maintaining includes\\: Agilent GC’s and GC/MS, Agilent LC’s, Agilent Q-TOF, Wyatt GPC/MALS, and Dionex IC. Chromatography software includes\\: Agilent Chemstation and Mass Hunter, Perkin Elmer Total Chrom, and Wyatt Astra. Other qualifications include\\:
• PhD in Analytical Chemistry, or a related field 5-10 years of relevant industrial experience. • Significant research record in Chromatography • Experience in the area of organic small molecule and polymer analysis. Experience in the creation of robust analytical methods. • Experience specifically in Surfactants Analysis is desirable but not required. • The candidate should have hands on experience with much of the listed chromatography instrumentation or similar instrumentation. • Strong computer skills. Base expectation is ability to operate MS Office suite of programs at a proficient level. • Ability to apply statistical measures to data analysis. • Ability to troubleshoot and repair instruments is a plus. • There is a strong preference for a practical person who is hands on in the laboratory and focused on achieving results. • The candidate will have to possess good interpersonal skills enabling them to interact with colleagues and customers. The job will require little travel. • Strong work ethic, good oral and written communication skills, and proficient in Microsoft Office programs
