Working under general supervision, this individual undertakes colony management responsibilities within the Serreze Lab. This position combines part-time mouse room colony management with part-time laboratory responsibilities. Approximately sixty percent of the applicantu2019s time will be spent on the maintenance of ~40 unique, mostly complex, mouse stocks used to delineate the genetic mechanisms of autoimmune type 1 diabetes. These duties include the rotation of breeders, weaning, and accurately recording pedigree information into the JAX Colony Management (Microsoft Access based) computer software system. Another requirement includes accurate urinary glucose analyses of large numbers of experimental mice to determine onset of autoimmune diabetes. The remaining 40% of the applicantu2019s time will be spent performing laboratory activities such as reagent preparation, routine PCR- and flow cytometry-based genotyping, assisting in experiments, as well as performing other basic laboratory duties. As time and aptitude allows, the applicant can be trained in more advanced techniques. The primary emphasis of this position will focus on colony management with secondary emphasis on research and operational needs. This individual may be required to work flexible shifts that could include evenings, week-ends and/or holidays depending on the demands of the research and/or laboratory operations. Key Responsibilities: Colony Management u2013 60% Maintains appropriate breeding scheme(s) as required per strainReports colony productivity changes to Laboratory Manager and/or SupervisorConsistently manages breeder rotation as required per strain and appropriately identifies and selects replacement breeder miceAccurately maintains strain pedigree in JAX Colony Management computer softwareAccurate urinary glucose analyses of large numbers of experimental mice to determine onset of autoimmune diabetesUpdates current colony status development notes citing appropriate milestone datesPromptly utilizes genotyping results for colony maintenanceImplements the breeding scheme of new strains as determined by the Laboratory Manager and/or other research team membersLearns fundamental processes of data collection and analysis of reproductive performance Experimental Support, Biomethods & Special Projectsu2013 40% Reagent preparationMasters biomethod techniques and efficiently performs the following:Animal euthanasia in accordance with established laboratory procedures for humanely euthanizing mice in barrier facilitiesAnimal restraintEar notch, JAX Ear Tag, tattoo identification methodsTail tipping biosample collectionEye bleedingTail vein i.v. injectionsRoutine PCR and flow cytometry-based genotypingAssisting with experimentsHarvesting tissuesAbility to master new experimental techniques and Biomethods as needed. Regular, reliable and consistent attendance. Ability to meet flexible and changing demands including some hours on weekends and holidays. Ability to work flexible schedule depending on research/operational needs. Knowledge of mouse genetics as acquired by a degree in the biological sciences or 1u20132 years work experience in which animal husbandry and colony management and wet bench experience were major job responsibilities Senior Research Technologist - Knowledge of mouse genetics as acquired by a degree in the biological sciences or 5 years work experience in which animal husbandry, colony management were major job responsibilities. Successful completion of Lab Animal Science or equivalent experience. Biomethods training, or ability to quickly obtain such, resulting in the ability to ear notch mice, collect peripheral blood, tail tips, and cull mouse colonies. Prior training in PCR and/or flow cytometry based techniques is a plus. Successful completion of the Laboratoryu2019s Genetics course or equivalent college accredited coursework. Skilled in utilizing the JAX Colony Management computer software system, or have the ability to quickly learn the Microsoft Access based software program. Knowledge of barrier room function. Regular, reliable and consistent attendance. Demonstrated team player with professional, positive attitude and willingness to learn and be flexible. Detail orientated, flexible, ability to multi-task and remain focused. Successful proven record of written and oral communication skills sufficient to permit clear and effective exchange of information. Week-end and holiday work may be required on a rotating basis or as dictated by research needs. Individuals with a higher level of experience may be considered for a higher level position.
