Working under general supervision, this individual undertakes colony management responsibilities within the Serreze Lab. This position combines part-time mouse room colony management with part-time laboratory responsibilities. Approximately sixty percent of the applicantu2019s time will be spent on the maintenance of ~40 unique, mostly complex, mouse stocks used to delineate the genetic mechanisms of autoimmune type 1 diabetes. These duties include the rotation of breeders, weaning, and accurately recording pedigree information into the JAX Colony Management (Microsoft Access based) computer software system. Another requirement includes accurate urinary glucose analyses of large numbers of experimental mice to determine onset of autoimmune diabetes. The remaining 40% of the applicantu2019s time will be spent performing laboratory activities such as reagent preparation, routine PCR- and flow cytometry-based genotyping, assisting in experiments, as well as performing other basic laboratory duties. As time and aptitude allows, the applicant can be trained in more advanced techniques. The primary emphasis of this position will focus on colony management with secondary emphasis on research and operational needs. This individual may be required to work flexible shifts that could include evenings, week-ends and/or holidays depending on the demands of the research and/or laboratory operations. Prior training in PCR and/or flow cytometry based techniques is a plus. Successful completion of the Laboratoryu2019s Genetics course or equivalent college accredited coursework. Skilled in utilizing the JAX Colony Management computer software system, or have the ability to quickly learn the Microsoft Access based software program. Knowledge of barrier room function.
