Under direction, independently conduct research projects based on reviews of scientific literature and recent advances in related fields while contributing original\/novel ideas of major methodological significance to projects, designing key experiments and developing new techniques. The incumbent independently designs and performs in- vivo preclinical imaging experiments using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), bioluminescence, positron emission tomography (PET), and computed tomography (CT) instrumentation using specialized knowledge of image data analyses of the acquired data sets to analyze findings. The incumbent will be responsible for preparing disease models which are the subject of the imaging studies. Additionally, the incumbent will be required to communicate and manage interactions with multiple parties who are stakeholders in these imaging studies. The incumbent is responsible for the writing, preparation and editing of materials and methods sections for scientific publications including journal manuscripts and book chapters. The incumbent will also be responsible for aspects of grant proposal preparation and submission, including technical writing and editing, budget preparation, and aiding compliance with federal, state and university regulatory requirements for funded research. Aspects of the job also involve helping to initiate and manage MRI aspects of experimental clinical trial projects. The position requires the management of aspects of academic-industrial collaborations. Performs other related functions as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Extensive theoretical knowledge and practical experience in Biology, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related scientific discipline. Proven ability to independently execute research projects, through the independent planning, organizing and performing of experiments and selecting of data for analysis. Skill in experimental design and adaptation of methods to achieve results. Ability to integrate data from multiple sources to synthesize conclusions. Ability to read and abstract scientific articles and apply to the design of experiments. Knowledge, experience, and demonstrated ability in the development, maintenance, and execution of research protocols and techniques. Proven demonstrated experience interpreting, troubleshooting and analyzing results of scientific experiments. Advanced knowledge in physics and skill in MRI, PET, CT and bioluminescence. Extensive experience in animal experimentation and disease model preparation, particularly cancer models and inflammation models. Demonstrated skill and experience with digital image manipulation software. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Master\u2019s degree or PhD in Biology, Bioengineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related scientific discipline. General understanding of UCSD policies and procedures. Strong knowledge of campus structure, organization, research programs, UC policies and procedures relating to research, and research facilities. SPECIAL CONDITIONS Employment is subject to a criminal background check. Willing to work with ionizing radiation sources, carcinogens, and research animals. Occasional travel to different sites around UCSD campus. Work requires a flexible schedule, which may include weekends, late nights, and holidays as necessary to achieve research goals.
