GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Channing Division of Network Medicine (CDNM) is a research division within the Department of Medicine at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.. CDNM is comprised of three units, Systems Genetics and Genomics, Systems Pathobiology, and Chronic Disease Epidemiology. The Channing Chronic Disease Epidemiology unit (CDE) is currently seeking a Technical Research Assistant Level I (TRAI) for the BWH/Harvard Cohorts Biorepository (BHCB).

CDE conducts several of the largest, most intensively studied longitudinal cohorts in the world. Biospecimens from these (and other well-known research studies) are collected, managed, and distributed by the BHCB. As one of the largest longitudinal biorepositories in the country, the BHCB manages the safe storage of over 3 million research biospecimens and distributes an average of 50,000 specimens annually for research. With the goal of furthering our mission and advancing a broad range of complex, chronic disease and public health research we are embarking on a new study focused on the human microbiome. The Microbiome Among Nurses (Micro-N) study will collect microbiome samples from up to 25,000 research participants.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under supervision of the collection manager the TRAI will receive, process, and store biologic specimens that arrive by mail. This includes maintaining the inventory of specimen records using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), performing data-entry and data and sample Quality Analysis (QA), and producing progress reports. The TRAI will use laboratory automation to process gut (stool) and oral (tongue swab) microbiome samples for storage and store specimens in freezers for future analysis. The TRAI will be responsible for retrieving samples from storage, preparing samples for distribution and shipping specimens to collaborating labs for analysis. The TRAI will also assist with data entry, data management, data cleaning, and other general tasks as needed .
Sample Receipt: Open and check all incoming packages for completeness. Log packages into LIMS system. Create labels for incoming samples. Place samples into temporary storage.
Sample Processing: Following protocols, use LIMS system in conjunction with laboratory automation to aliquot samples. Work closely with Project Manager to deal with issues as they arise.
Sample Storage: Use LIMS system to store samples in -80°C freezers or in automated sample storage system.
Conduct data entry for project-specific data in the form of CRF's and project reports.
Continuously evaluate data collection tools and processes and offer solutions to ensure they are meeting the needs of the study.
