At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutchs pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nations first and largest cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Womens Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. The laboratory studies human associated microbial communities and how changes in the microbiota impact human health and disease. Our focus is the study of the vaginal microbiome and its relationship with bacterial vaginosis, preterm birth, and HIV infection. We use molecular microbiological methods, such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), for detecting and quantifying microbes in human tissues and on body surfaces. This is a dynamic team of investigators making contributions on the cutting edge of science.
* Digestion of human tissues, such as vaginal swabs, for purification of DNA
* Conventional and real-time quantitative PCR
* Gel electrophoresis with photo documentation
* Broad range 16S rRNA gene PCR with high throughput next generation to characterize microbial communities.
* DNA sequence analysis
* Bright field and fluorescence microscopy
* Bacterial, fungal, and human cell culture
* In situ hybridization with confocal microscopy
* Ordering supplies, making reagents, maintenance of equipment, lab safety
* Leading and problem solving on selected projects
* Training new research techs in the lab
Working conditions: This work will involve manipulation of infectious tissue samples and thus exposure to bio-hazardous material, and the need to wear protective garments. Molecular biology methods will involve frequent use of pipettes and repetitive motions. The laboratory group consists of other technicians, students, PhD postdoctoral fellows, and MD fellows.
Research Tech I Qualifications: Bachelors degree in the biological sciences with relevant laboratory experience in molecular biology that extends beyond coursework to work on a laboratory research project. Ideally the candidate will have a minimum of two years of general laboratory experience or at least one year of laboratory experience with PCR.
Research Tech II Qualifications: Intermediate level position requiring 2 years previous experience working in a laboratory. BA/BS or extensive laboratory experience (4 years). Independent research experience outside of the laboratory is required
Desired qualifications: Experience with general methods in molecular biology and microbiology, especially the manipulation of DNA, PCR, and DNA sequence analysis. Experience with sterile technique is critical. Manual dexterity for setting up assays (good hands). Experience with computers, computer programs such as Word and Excel, and search techniques such as PubMed and BLAST.
