R&D Microwave & Sensor Engineer (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking qualified candidates for an Microwave and Sensor Engineer position. Our team is looking for qualified candidates for the Directed Energy Enterprise team with a focus on compact Pulsed Power development and/or High Power Electromagnetic (HPEM) systems. The department delivers full HPEM system capabilities and knowledge of RF systems, HPEM sources, Pulsed Power, power modulators and/or antenna design or modeling of such systems as required. This is a fast paced, cutting edge design and research job in a team environment. You will be responsible for designing and performing experiments, modeling, analyzing data, preparing proposals, working with multi-disciplinary teams, and describing the research to customers and others (through publications and presentations). You will work in a fully-furnished, state-of-the-art high-speed electronics, pulsed power/ high voltage, and HPEM laboratory. Team building and program management skills would be a plus.
This job posting is primarily focused on RF and EM skills and those candidates will be given priority, we will however consider candidates with skills/experience/graduate work in any of the following areas: Marx generators, pulse forming lines, high voltage switching (gas, solid state, liquid, electrical trigger, laser trigger), high power electromagnetic systems, RF design, RF sources, Pulsed Power or RF modeling, advanced materials, or other related technologies.
Requires a bachelorâ€™s and masterâ€™s degree in a relevant STEM discipline plus two or more yearsâ€™ experience, or a doctorate in a relevant STEM discipline; a bachelorâ€™s degree in a STEM discipline plus four yearsâ€™ experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
The candidate must have experience in presenting scientific results through publications and through conferences.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
You should have some experience with some subset of the following tools: electrostatic codes, circuit codes, Mathcad/MATLAB, LabVIEW, HFSS, FEKO, PSpice, SolidWorks or other design tools.
Experience with analog and digital circuit design for controls is desired.
FPGA programming experience is desired.
Knowledge of the current state of the art in HPEM directed energy is desired.
Team building and program management skills would be a plus.
You will need to be a self-starter able to adapt to a fast-paced, DoD customer-focused operation with emphasis on meeting milestones.
You must have demonstrated experience in effectively working in a team environment.
You must have good documentation skills (for assistance in record keeping, documentation, and ES&H compliance) and attention to detail.
The Directed Energy Missions Department (05443) is part of the Directed Energy Enterprise that also includes the Directed Energy Applications Department (05444) and the Directed Energy Assessments Department (05445). Areas of interest for this enterprise include high-power electromagnetic systems, compact pulsed power systems, radio frequency sources and antennas, electronic effects phenomena, photoconductive semiconductor switches, compact tunable laser sources, laser-induced plasmas, and laser imaging and diagnostics. The Directed Energy Missions Department (05443) executes research and development to support mission execution of directed energy technologies and associated sources, sensors, and components. Work environments range from laboratory work in state-of-the-art facilities to field work at local and remote test sites. Work products range from studies and analyses to delivery of beyond-state-of-the-art hardware to support our customer base to move Directed Energy technologies to the warfighter.
