Job Description:

The Analytical Technology organization is well on its way to transforming from a service organization to a true technology delivery partner for our main (Shell) customers. The Researcher in the US Spectroscopy and QMI team plays an important role in the global team in developing and deploying a broad range of technological advancements in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to enable reliable measurements, characterization and problem-solving for applications ranging from downstream, upstream, integrated gas as well as Energy Transition and R&D programs in P&T.

Where you fit in -

The Researcher in the US Spectroscopy and QMI team will be a technical expert in the global NMR area who will be responsible for providing advanced NMR technical solutions ensuring that innovative solutions are implemented to provide reliable, fast and cost-effective analytical measurements, characterization and problem-solving locally as well as globally. Chemists in Analytical Technical Services are responsible for using their analytical and business knowledge to solve a broad range of customer problems. This entails understanding customer requirements, formulating experimental programs with due attention to safety, and reporting results.

As a member of the Spectroscopy and QMI team, the Researcher will be expected to partner with our (Shell) customers, understand their needs, leverage their broad and extensive Analytical Chemistry, in particular NMR knowledge, to provide cutting-edge solutions. With broad NMR knowledge, the successful candidate would be able to scout external emerging technologies as well as select appropriate hardware and develop methods for relevant Shell applications.

The Researcher will serve as an important resource in the department, not only in lab operations, problem-solving and lab safety, but also in guiding/mentoring less experienced staff. They will also engage and share best practices in the global team.

This position has no direct reports.

What's the role -

Utilize a range of NMR techniques for liquids and solids including but not limited to pulse-field gradient, magic angle spinning, temperature dependent spectroscopy, material properties to support and guide synthesis, characterization of surfaces, etc. to support a range of business clients either at the local hub or in collaboration with global Analytical Chemistry colleagues & customers at the other hub locations.

Contribute to problem-solving activities that involve the synthesis of analytical data from a range of analytical techniques.

Develop new applications as per evolving business needs using digital approaches for advanced analysis of data such as modeling and computer simulation in collaboration with colleagues in the Digital and Computational teams

Work effectively with the local and global Elemental, Separations and Spectroscopy/QMI, imaging teams as well as the local and global business partners

Use NMR to help internal clients understand what is happening in their products, process streams, or laboratories.

Through the Analytical Global Skill Networks, collaborate with technical colleagues at all hub locations to share technical and customer knowledge, as well as propagate best practices throughout the organization

Design, develop, validate, deploy and maintain various complex NMR analytical instruments and methods as well as day-to-day hands-on work in the laboratory as well as supervision of laboratory staff performing testing, while paying close attention to safety and quality.

Gatekeeping on new technology and bring relevant technology development on the market into Shell applications.

Collaborate with external partners (universities or research institutes) to advance NMR technology and applications in Shell

Make recommendations for and manage CapEx and R&D projects in area of specialization

Knowledge management by documenting methods and SR reports.

Mentor, train and guide less experienced staff in NMR/Spec. space as well as actively participate in Global Skill Network for Spec./QMI.

Skills and Requirements

What we need from you -

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

PhD (preferred) or MS in Chemistry, Physics, Biology.

At least four (4) years academic or industrial experience specifically in an aligned NMR technical area is required.

Must have solid experience in Organic Chemistry.

Expertise and hands-on experience in setting up various NMR instruments including liquid, solid state and bench-top NMRs, utilizing various probes, to pulse-field gradient, magic angle spinning, temperature dependent spectroscopy as well as IT knowledge of NMR software packages is a must.

Experience in one or more of these areas is desirable - porous media, organic molecular complexes, fuels, inorganic complexes, metal complexes to name a few

Significant experience in Analytical project and R&D development and deployment is required, including experience in supporting projects across organizations as well as externally such as with universities.

A high technical curiosity, learner mindset and ability to work across natural teams without organizational authority is essential for the job.

Demonstrated ability to utilize NMR and chemistry knowledge for problem solving and method development.

Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects with varying and time-critical priorities.

Capability to build and manage internal and external stakeholder relationships and able to collaborate across organizational boundaries (locally and globally)

Strong verbal and written communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences

Is curious about company business, processes, and products, and how one can contribute

Has continuous improvement mind set and is adaptive to new technology and changes
