GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under the supervision of Bradley Hyman MD Ph.D. in the Department of Neurology, Alzheimer's disease (AD) Research Unit, the technologist will perform flow cytometry and cell sorting experiments for projects focusing on molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative changes in AD in order to help develop therapeutic treatment. He/she will perform experiments independently and under supervision of post-doctoral fellows using flow cytometry, cell sorting and other specialized methods. The research technologist will maintain the flow cytometry equipment and is expected to work both independently and as a team member. The research technologist will contribute to large complex collaborative experiments where he/she will be expected to discuss experiments and results with the group.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Executes protocols of routine and non-routine experiments
Performs basic design and modification of protocols
Troubleshooting of protocols
Flow cytometry and cell sorting
Uses particular immunohistochemical methods and may develop modifications of existing techniques or procedures
Summarizes and analyzes acquired data using scientific and statistical techniques; present data at lab meetings
Prepares and presents reports
Organizes and/or drafts material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, or other documents for publication and/or presentation
Participates in the design of experiments or field work
Procurement of supplies, the scientific maintenance of the laboratory and the organization of research material
Library research and database analysis, upkeep of written records of experimental procedures and data analysis
Instruct students and others in basic laboratory methodology and lab instrument operation
Instruct students and others in basic laboratory methodology and lab instrument operation; and both, participate and present data at lab meetings
Will be responsible for ordering lab supplies and reagents;

Working knowledge of data management programs
High degree of computer literacy
Demonstrated competence in research techniques and methodologies

Bachelor's degree required; MA/MS/MPH Preferred
Minimum of 3 years of directly related flow cytometry experience is required.
