What You Will Do

This position will (1) support LANL project, engineering, and maintenance activities at NCERC in Nevada, (2) perform Fissionable Material Handling duties, and (3) provide miscellaneous support services in a Hazard Category 2 Nuclear Facility. *Note: This position is permanently located in Nevada.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Perform Finite Element Analysis in support of structural calculations.

Create and revise engineering drawing utilizing CAD software.

Execute hands-on manipulation of special nuclear material, maintenance of critical assembly machines, and equipment setup in support of future operations.

Perform various project support tasks to include decontamination activities, escorting customers and visitors, etc.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Ability to work as an independent agent and as a team member in a high-intensity, dynamic nuclear operations environment.

Knowledge in the areas of mechanical, electrical, and nuclear engineering.

Ability to schedule, execute, and meet directed milestones.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to perform hands-on activities related to equipment testing and maintenance.

Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.

Desired Skills:

Knowledge and experience with structural analysis using Finite Element Analysis software.

Knowledge and experience with CAD software.

Knowledge and experience with nuclear facility operations and support.

Knowledge and experience with radiation detection and measurement equipment.

Experience handling nuclear material.

Advanced degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, or nuclear).

Active Q clearance.

Education::A Bachelor of Science in engineering (mechanical, electrical, or nuclear) from an ABET accredited engineering college or university program.

Additional Details:

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Where You Will Work

Permanently located in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Advanced Nuclear Experiments Group, NEN-6, provides the capability to conduct hands-on and remotely operated experiments with significant quantities of nuclear material to a variety of national security programs. This capability, which became operational in 2010, supports both critical and subcritical experiments and training. NEN-6 provides the operational backbone for the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). NCERC operates four criticality assemblies that can be broadly categorized as benchmark, fast-burst, and general-purpose assemblies. NCERC is operated within a hazard category 2 nuclear facility located at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).
