The Tishman Environment & Design Center is a university-wide center that fosters the integration of bold design, policy, and social justice approaches to environmental issues to advance just and sustainable outcomes in collaboration with communities. At the Tishman Center and The New School, sustainability is truly cross-disciplinary, incorporating and collaborative space that brings together stakeholders from a variety of disciplines, schools, and populations. The Center serves as a collaborative resource center and academic convener for environmental justice groups, community leaders, design, and climate experts to create discourse, dialogue, and action on today’s most challenging issues.

GAIA’s work in the U.S. and Canada has helped to keep the public educated about the true climate, environmental and economic impacts of quick fix approaches to waste such as incineration, and they help to promote the benefits of alternative approaches like zero waste programs.


has grounded its work in impacted communities by supporting organizations, alliances, and coalitions around the country that are fighting incinerators, advocating for zero waste, and pushing for environmental and climate justice.

As a part of this ongoing collaboration with



will be co-producing a report for a


funded initiative with three pilot communities as they seek to transition away from an incineration based waste system to zero waste, just transition systems. We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Research Assistant to assist with this research project.

Job Description

The Research Assistant will support the



research partnership in the research, development and writing of a report focused on national conditions that will support the movement to shut down polluting, aging incinerators and develop viable alternatives so new incinerators do not consign the same communities to decades more pollution and health issues. Job responsibilities include:

● the compilation and coordination of research including quantitative, geographic, demographic, finance and qualitative data sources on baseline conditions in relation to incinerators nationally

● policy analysis of regulatory and financial conditions that drive national incineration industry

● development, production and presentation of a final report with


partners’ full input.

Position would begin May 2018 and go through May 2019 working full time in the summer and 10-20 hours/week during the academic year.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Policy Analysis

● Research and Writing skills

● Ability to reliably work 10-20 hours/week during the academic year

● Highly motivated with the ability to take initiative and function as a self-starter

● Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as independently

● Experience working with communities and collaborative, participatory research

● Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through

● Demonstrated proficiency in project management and policy research

● Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

● An interest in environmental justice, zero waste, and critical participatory action research
