General Description of the Job

Delaware State University’s Aquatic Sciences Program, Dover, Delaware, seeks a self-motivated Research Technician in Fisheries/Aquatic Ecology who has experience in environmental testing, aquatic species collection and monitoring. It is expected of the technician to assist with various field monitoring and water quality testing. Strong field experience and skills are expected from the technician to assist students in various research projects they conduct as part of their USDA funded internships. The research technician will be in charge of obtaining and analyzing water samples from Delaware Inland Bays for a suite of pollutants. Laboratory section of the program requires analyzing water, oyster and sediment from the Delaware Inland Bays for nitrogen and carbon isotopes. Another aspect of the project includes looking at species diversity in and around oyster aquaculture and oyster reef. The Research Technician will be expected to work cooperatively with other environmental and agricultural funded programs as needed. The position also requires the individual to assist with student training and mentoring, data analysis, and report preparation. This position is funded for about 2 years depending on the job performance and funding.

Essential Functions

The following are the functions essential to perform this job:


Assist the program director with the funded project objectives and research activities in the lab and field;


Conduct field-based research as part of the program requirement;


Assist with student training and mentoring;


Assist the program director with data collection and analysis, reports, and publication.


Assist the program director with reports and laboratory management.


Have the skills to train students for field monitoring.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Must have a Driver License.


Must have an experience working on the boat or on water (it is highly preferred if the candidate knows how to operate the boat)


Must know how to swim and snorkel


Proven experience integrating field research with lab research;


Proven ability to work successfully with diverse students and faculty;


Must have effective networking, oral communication, and writing skills;


Ability to work collaboratively with other faculty from diverse institutions (e.g., academia, government, NGO environmental and conservation groups;


Demonstrated skills in data collection, database development, and management;


Demonstrated experience in presentations, technical papers, and/or reports;


Proven ability in technical skills required to conduct independent research and become a self-starter;


Experience with data analysis and writing reports;


Self-motivated and proven ability to work both independently and as a team member.

Qualification Standards

The successful candidate must have a Master of Science degree from a fully accredited institution of higher learning plus 6 months of experience in Fisheries, Aquaculture, Aquatic Ecology, Marine Biology, Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, Field Biology, or relevant fields.
