Job Description:

The Global Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) initiative at RTI has an immediate opening for a GLOBAL HEALTH RESEARCHER (Internal title: Research Public Health Analyst 2) with expertise in chronic, non-communicable diseases. The NCD Initiative leads RTI s growing business in global NCDs, working with experts across the organization and global partners, coordinating client projects and business development, and setting a vision for RTI s contributions to preventing and managing the risks and diseases that constitute the largest health burdens globally. The program conducts contract and grant funded research in the areas of chronic, noncommunicable diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, and the main risk factors for NCDs including obesity, tobacco, poor air quality, and alcohol. Our program provides clients with innovative research, valuable economic analysis, and effective policy evaluation to improve public health.

This position is suitable for an early-to-mid career epidemiologist, economist, or quantitative researcher who will be responsible for carrying out a range of investigative and analytical activities related to the surveillance, detection, prevention, and management of diseases. The researcher must have experience conducting studies in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) with inter-disciplinary teams of experts, have an interest in implementation science, and knowledge of policy processes. Areas of work may be in NCD epidemiology and surveillance, public health capacity development, and chronic disease policy in LMIC settings (including Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia).

The successful candidate is expected to develop collaborative relationships with other project staff; interact with internal and external clients and partners; and bring innovative ideas, methodologies, and approaches to problems associated with NCDs. The very successful candidate will have a track record of publication and grant-writing, and a curious and wide-ranging intellect with an interest in systems design.

This position will travel to domestic and international locations for project site visits (up to 25% of time).

THE PREFERRED LOCATION FOR THIS POSITION IS IN SEATTLE, WA; HOWEVER, THE WASHINGTON, D.C. OR RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC OFFICES MAY BE CONSIDERED.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Work under the direction of a senior manager, conducting research including quantitative and qualitative data analysis related to NCDs, needs assessment, surveillance, data collection, survey design, and intervention outcomes

Have a solid understanding of cost-effectiveness principles, research design, and advanced econometrics or biostatistics

Develop novel empirical investigation, modeling and other data analytic approaches, suitable for data-weak environments. Familiarity with simulation and decision analytic modeling is also highly desirable.

Contribute to intervention and evaluation design, including cohort analytics, IRB protocol development and execution

*

Design, collect, and maintain data sets for retrospective and prospective studies

*

Prepare manuscripts and evidence-based policy briefs for publication

*

Formulate and implement strategic communications to relevant audiences, including participating in public dissemination

*

Prepare literature reviews on NCD issues

*

Develop and provide scientific advice and technical assistance to various public, private, and nonprofit health and health-related organizations * Assist with managing overall project tasks, monitoring the work of consultants/subcontractors, as well as analyzing data. Identify new opportunities through existing clients, professional networks, or conference attendance.

* Participate in writing grants and other funding proposals

* Perform other duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

* PhD (in Epidemiology, Public Health, International Relations, Economics, Global Health or related field) or MD, and at least 2 years' relevant experience

Global NCD research experience with at least 5 years experience working in or dedicated to LMIC-focused health issues

Excellent interpersonal skills and cross-cultural competency

*

Research methods and implementation science training

*

Excellent oral and written communication skills

*

A history of successful projects that have led to publication

*

Ability to work in a small team with humor, patience, and a generous attitude

*

Ability to travel to domestic and international locations. Travel will include site visits to project locations.

Fluency in English is required

*

To qualify, applicants must be legally-authorized to work in the United States.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Entrepreneurial spirit. First-hand experience in small, growing organization is preferred

Fluency in languages other than English - particularly Spanish or French - is preferred * Knowledge of global and national NCD organizations, including private sector, is desirable and preferred
