Cytokinetics will cut 46 jobs as it stops its cancer research programs, and a key
executive will leave the operation. The company announced it will refocus its resources to its muscle programs when it stops oncology research.
Over its 11-year history, the South San Francisco company lost nearly $300 million and does not have any
approved drugs to show for it.
The realignment for the company correlates to a third-quarter change of nearly $2.5 million, mainly attributed to the costs of firing almost 29% of its 160 employees. The muscle programs are working to find compounds to treat heart failure, hypertension, and asthma. Such programs are in the early or middle stages of development.
In addition to job cuts, the vice president of discovery research and technology will leave the company at the end of September.
