The Genzyme Corporation, a world leader in
biotechnology and critical health research, opened its new facility, the Genzyme Science Center, in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Genzyme’s $125 million-dollar, 180,000-square-foot operation is significant not only for the work done there, but for the fact that it was recognized by the US Green Building Council. The
Science Center received gold certification for Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design, one of ten labs to boast such a distinction.
The Center’s green features include a state-of-the-art eco-friendly heating and cooling system, energy efficient fume hoods, and low-flow water fixtures, and the building being mostly glass allows natural lighting for less usage of electricity.
Established in 1981, Genzyme medical research studies endocrinology and neurological disorders, as well as genetic, cardiovascular, and kidney diseases as they relate to early stages of treatments for cancer, Parkinson’s, and heart disease.
